 Mission figlet dripping with honey

Nothing great is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig. I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.
– Epictetus

If you tell me that you desire a fig… I answer you that you are in luck today!  Orchard Choice Fig Spreads are helping “Spread the Love” with their four delicious fig spreads and dried Mission Figlets.  I got to try all four spreads and the dried Mission Figlets, too.  I think you’ll enjoy their sensuous texture and flavor just as much as I did!

Orchard Choice Fig Spreads

These spreads come in four unique flavors:

  • Organic Mission Spread – Sweet, earthy, and bursting with fig flavor
  • Fig Orange Spread – Figs laced with a tangy twist of orange
  • Fig and Port Spread – Luscious figs drenched in port
  • Balsamic Pepper Spread – Figs with sassy balsamic vinegar and spicy black pepper

Why not spread the love on Valentine’s Day with these pairing ideas?  It’s the perfect way to spoil yourself or your special someone.

  • Start with breakfast in bed and fresh hot scones topped cream cheese and Orchard Choice California Orange Fig Spread or Organic Mission California Fig Spread.
  • Top heart-shaped crackers with blue cheese and a dollop of Orchard Choice Port Wine California Fig Spread.
  • Start your Valentine’s dinner off with a fig appetizer. Cut figs in half, stuff with goat cheese, wrap in a thin, silky smooth strip of prosciutto, then drizzle with a little aged balsamic vinegar.

If you’re looking for even more romantic meal ideas, try these aphrodisiac-packed recipes.  (Aphrodisiac ingredients appear in parentheses.)

California Fig and Arugula Salad (figs, arugula)
Pork Medallions with Honeyed Figs and Apples (figs, honey, apples)

Braised Chicken with Fennel and Dried Figs (figs, fennel, carrots, garlic)

Well, I have 15 fig trees, all rare varieties. Nothing is better than a fresh fig eaten right off the tree. I have a few favorites. One is Verte. It tastes like strawberry jam. One is Mary Lane seedless. That drip of honey tells you exactly the joy you will get with your first bite. Unfortunately, figs don’t produce year round, and these spreads look delicious. I’d try them over cream cheese as an appetizer, on pancakes instead of syrup, and use them as a filling for buttery cookies. OH, and toast.

I started all my fig trees from cuttings. I do live in a good climate for them. They love hot summers and mild winters, which is what you get here in my part of Southern California. You can get cuttings on Ebay now when the trees are dormant. Nothing like a fresh fig! People in NY have fig trees in containers, which they bring into their basements for winter protection. Just FYI!

I have one sad stick that may be a fig bush, but I don’t know if winter killed it yet. I’m waiting to see if it sprouts leaves. We have 4 or 5 varieties available in local nurseries, so maybe I’ll give it another go and be more conscientious about it.

Lucky you! I keep trying to grow a fig bush in my backyard, but I am so not a gardener. If it requires watering, it’s doomed!

I’m imagining using these spreads for fig and goat cheese crostini and fig pancake rolls. With maybe a few spoonfuls going directly into my mouth! 🙂

Living in the cold Midwest we dont much see good figs here, and certainly cant grow them. I adore the taste of figs though and for us it is a treat. I would use these on a piece of hot homemade bread or perhaps on some pancakes or if I was being honest , I would grab a teaspoon and just take a spoonful and close my eyes and dream of warm breezes. So many ways to eat figs I couldnt pick just one.

I grew up with a fig tree and miss eating figs off the tree while they were still warm from the sun. Trying to capture that again. I would use the jam baked with cheese inside phyllo dough.

What a lovely thought. I remember my fig tree when I was a kid- it was in a very sunny spot that would get so hot during the summer!

Oh my goodness have not seen one of these since 1989…. We worked in Israel and they had orchards of them….. The farmers wife would take a fig, and put marzipan and a half a walnut in it and service them with a drizzle of honey…. So good…… Mmmmmmmm…..
