Confisco Grille Islands of Adventure Gluten Free
When I first made plans to visit Universal’s Islands of Adventure, I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of gluten free food. I’d done my homework, carefully reading reviews of restaurants and poring over the available menus, but you never really know how it’s going to shake out until you get there.
Since the restaurant didn’t know that I am a food blogger, I was treated as just another guest. Which makes it all the more wonderful that I was treated like a queen. A queen who happened to have a food allergy.
Upon being seated at our table, I alerted the server that I had a gluten allergy (yes, I know celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance aren’t allergies, but I’ve found that restaurant staff seem to prefer calling them allergies, which I don’t mind). He said he’d bring the chef out to discuss the options.
As I waited, I looked over the menu, which was marked with which items could be made gluten free. There were quite a lot of choices, so I was grateful to have a moment to narrow down my options.
By the time the chef arrived a few minutes later, I already knew that I wanted the Pico Avocado Burger. My husband suggested that we try the Trader Wings, done Buffalo style, to which I readily agreed.
The chef let me know that they had a dedicated fryer that was gluten free, which was fabulous news. I could have French fries with the burger! He also explained that the bun would be an Udi’s bun, and that instead of fried avocado slices, he would garnish the burger with fresh avocado. Everything seemed to be taken care of, so we placed our order and sat back to enjoy the atmosphere while we waited.
The Trader Wings arrived first. They were hot, crispy, and served with carrots, celery, blue cheese dressing, and Buffalo sauce. We ate them right up.
Next up came my entree, the Pico Avocado Burger. I’d noticed from reading the menu that the burger patties were made in-house, so my expectations were high.
It was easily one of the most delicious burgers I’ve ever had. Usually, a burger needs a bun, and tastes lonely without it. Although this burger came with a very nice, warm, gluten free bun, the burger and its toppings were so fresh and flavorful that I happily removed most of the bun and tore into the burger itself with a knife and fork, the better to appreciate this burger masterpiece.
Of course, the true test of a gluten free success is how I feel within an hour or so after eating. I felt great! Not even a twinge of symptoms.
I would highly recommend Confisco Grille at Universal’s Islands of Adventure for gluten free diners. Got a question? Comment below. I respond to all comments and love to answer your questions.
